Free to good home nightmare-Man tortures and kills 19 cats

Just another reason to not give animals away for free!

Appolonia, 50, of Aberdeen is alleged to have tortured and killed 19 cats given to him by animal rescuers when he answered their newspaper ads offering the felines for free to a good home.

Some of the people who gave Anthony Appolonia the cats were sobbing uncontrollably as they heard him admit to Superior Court Judge Edward M. Neafsey that he beat each of the cats with his own hands, breaking their bones, before drowning them in his bathtub.

"You broke their bones with your hands?'' Neafsey asked Appolonia, who responded affirmatively.

"You held the cats under the water in the bathtub until they could no longer breathe?'' the judge asked, to which Appolonia also answered that he did.

'It's horrible,'' John Casale of Matawan said afterward. "These are innocent animals. What pushes a person to do this?''

Casale brought his suspicions about Appolonia to the attention of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in December, after he went to Appolonia's house, knowing he had recently been given many cats, but found that none of the felines there.

Appolonia pleaded guilty to each of the 19 counts of animal cruelty that had been filed against him. Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Nicole Colucci said the state will recommend that Appolonia receive a five-year prison term when he is sentenced Dec. 4.

Under a plea bargain with Appolonia, he will forbidden for life from owning any animals, a restriction that will be enforced by the state Parole Department.

Kitten Update

Ramses and Checkers are doing very well. Ramses really wants to be with me but Checkers doesn't. Ramses "head butts" me all the time and gives me "kisses". He loves to just lay on my lap, which is surprising for a kitten. I go into the room he is in to do homework and be with the cats. He curls up on my lap, he might get up for a minute or two but he always comes back. It's almost like I am his mother and he comes back to me or reassurance.

Checkers has started hissing at me. I think she just didn't have the strength when I first got her. So, I guess that is a good sign. She is very friendly with Ramses and seems to become instantly comfortable when I put him in her cage.

I am still trying to trap the other kitten that I know is out there. I have tried trapping it 3 times. I think it's time to break out the tuna!

My Newest Favorite Show:Dogtown

My newest favorite show is Dogtown. Dogtown is a show done through Best Friends in Kanab, Utah. Best Friends is one of the largest, if not the largest, no kill shelter in the United States. Dogtown gives the stories of dog who have been given up on by everyone else--but Best Friends.

I frequently watch the show and tear up because it is so touching.

So, grab your box of tissues and settle in to watch the brave dogs on Dogtown.

2 Healthy Kittens!

Well, Ramses, a black male, and Checkers, a calico female, are both healthy. They both tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia. Whew! There is always a possibility of testing positive. Ramses weighed 4.5 pounds and Checkers is a petite 3 pounds. Ramses has his canine teeth and Checkers doesn't. The vet is not sure if they are from the same litter! Which means there could be two mother cats out there. I sure have my work cut out for me!

Support Best Friends and get a picture of your pet!

On September 27, thousands of Walgreens stores across the country will host a Pet Photo Shoot that will benefit Best Friends Animal Society.

People are encouraged to bring their beloved cat, dog, ferret, bird, iguana and all other types of companion animals to their local Walgreens to have their photos taken together.

There’s no charge for the photo shoot itself, but you have the option of spending $5.99 for a photo, photo CD, pet treats and photo coupons. Walgreens will donate $5 of each sale to animal welfare organizations: half to Best Friends and half to Delta Society.

“We are very pleased to be selected as a beneficiary of Walgreens’ Pet Photo Shoot promotion,” says Paul Berry, Best Friends chief executive officer. “Walgreens’ support of Best Friends is generous and most appreciated.”

Walgreens, based in Deerfield, Illinois, is the nation's largest retail pharmacy chain.

Supporting animal welfare efforts fits with the company’s mission to promote general physical and emotional wellness, according to Martha O’Bryan, manager of community affairs. “Through their many programs, these organizations seek to assist both people and animals alike when they are at their most vulnerable and defenseless,” O’Bryan says.

Ramses, is NOT feral!

Ramses is not feral. I am so happy that I don't have to spend the extra time to socialize this kitten. Unfortunately, since he is black, he will not be available for adoption until the first of November.

I trapped another kitten!

The first cat I trapped was a black one, we named him Ramses, after the Egyptian pharaoh. Tonight, I trapped another one, a Tortie. I am so happy that I trapped one that I actually saw. It is disappointing to trap a cat that you didn't even know about. One more kitten to go. I hope there is just one more out there.

Federal Puppy Mill Bill Introduced!!

Legislation Seeks to Close Loophole in Animal Welfare Act that Allows Internet Breeders to Sell Puppies without Federal Oversight

WASHINGTON — The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society Legislative Fund commend federal lawmakers for introducing bills that will crack down on abusive "puppy mills" in the United States — where breeding dogs are often stacked in wire cages for years to produce litter after litter. The legislation will close a loophole in the Animal Welfare Act that currently allows large, commercial breeders who sell puppies online and directly to the public to escape licensing and regulation.

The legislation — known as the "Puppy Uniform Protection Statute" (PUPS), or "Baby's Bill" in honor of rescued puppy mill survivor Baby who is the subject of Jana Kohl's new book A Rare Breed of Love — was introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday as H.R. 6949 by Reps. Sam Farr (D-Calif.), Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.), Lois Capps (D-Calif.) and Terry Everett (R-Ala.). A companion bill, S. 3519, was also introduced in the Senate by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.).

The bills also require that dogs used for breeding be removed from their cages for exercise every day. Female breeding dogs in puppy mills are typically forced to live their entire lives in small cages with no opportunity for exercise, no socialization, and little human interaction.

"Dogs are not livestock, and they shouldn't be treated like a cash crop," said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The Humane Society of the United States and president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. "We are grateful to federal lawmakers for introducing this legislation to curb the worst abuses in the puppy mill industry. It's a much-needed upgrade to our nation's laws that protect man's best friend from cruelty and harm."

Facilities that breed dogs for commercial resale through pet stores are required to be licensed and inspected under the federal Animal Welfare Act. But thanks to a gaping exception in the law, puppy mills that sell directly to the public are exempt from any federal oversight whatsoever. Unregulated Internet sellers and other direct sales facilities sell thousands of puppies a year to unsuspecting consumers. Due to improper care, their puppies are often sick, leaving outraged consumers with frail, sometimes dying puppies and high vet bills. Meanwhile, the breeding dogs at these facilities often spend their entire lives in constant confinement and deprivation.

"Sadly, finding your puppy online may well increase the chance that you'll be buying from a puppy mill," said Sen. Durbin. "Our bill simply requires that breeders obtain a license from the USDA if they raise more than 50 dogs in a 12-month period and sell directly to the public and sets forth reasonable standards of care for commercial breeders. Responsible dog breeders are not the target of this legislation, but hopefully it will put the puppy mills out of business."

"My work supporting puppy mill regulation goes back to my time in the California Assembly where I championed California's puppy mill law," Rep. Farr said. "I think it's very important that Congress take the time to address issues like animal welfare. These are the kinds of issues that really demonstrate who we are as a society."

"I'm proud to join with Congressman Farr and representatives of The Humane Society of the United States today as we continue our efforts to ensure that commercial dog breeders are appropriately regulated," added Rep. Gerlach. "Our bill, the PUPS Act, will close a loophole in current law that allows large breeding operations avoid any and all oversight. I am confident that this bill will not hinder the operation of reputable and responsible breeders. Instead, it is aimed at protecting dogs and making individuals who are motivated by profit over the fair and humane treatment of dogs accountable for their actions."

The legislation will close the loophole in the AWA that allows thousands of commercial breeders to go unregulated. It will require the following changes to the AWA:

* All dog breeders who sell more than 50 puppies per year directly to the public will be federally licensed and inspected; and
* Dogs at commercial breeding facilities must be given the opportunity to exercise for 60 minutes a day.
* The bill will not affect small breeders and hobby breeders who sell fewer than 50 dogs per year directly to the public, but is crafted to cover only the largest commercial breeding facilities.

Public concern about the inhumane conditions typical in puppy mills is at an all-time high, due to coverage on national television and several large-scale cruelty investigations and rescues from puppy mills this summer that The HSUS and local shelters spearheaded. Earlier this year, the Farm Bill passed by Congress included a new provision to ban the importation of puppies under six months old from puppy mills in China, Russia, Mexico and other foreign countries

Caught one kitten...

I put out the trap last night around 8pm, even though I wanted to do it earlier. I didn't feed them Thursday night. I was hoping to catch both of them but I knew it was a long shot. What happened surprised me a little. I went out and saw one kitten in the trap, and one kitten outside the trap running back and forth meowing. The poor kitten was worried about him sibling. Once I got the trap and the kitten into the light, I saw that this was an unexpected kitten. I saw a tortie and tabby kitten earlier this week-the one in the trap was black! So, who knows how many are out there!

I have 6 cats right now. Now, I have this kitten and possibly two more outside!

I feel morally obligated to help these kittens especially because the weather is getting colder. I also feel that it is too dangerous for them as kittens. If they were adult cats, I would trap them and get them fixed then release them. The kitten I have here looks to be about 6-7 months but the only way to really know their age is by their teeth.

This kitten is very calm and actually used the litter box over night. I was surprised to see that the cage was clean when I went in the room this morning. I expected to see an overturned litter box and food bowl and shredded paper. I didn't see any of that. I have a water bowl that attaches to the side of the cage. I've been through that-water soaked paper, litter and blankets.

I will keep you updated on these kittens and I can hopefully find the mother!

Wayside Waifs sends volunteers to Houston on VOLUNTEER's expense

Yesterday, I was at a meeting and a friend was telling me how Wayside Waifs asked her to go to Houston to help rescue animals. She was told to bring a tent to sleep in and pay her own way. Although the volunteers are expected to pay their own way, I can predict the headlines:

Wayside Waifs sends volunteers to help animals affected by Ike.This implies they paid for it. There will be no disclaimer saying that the volunteers had to pay their own way. For those of you who don't live here or don't know, Wayside Waifs has tons of money. They are the most well known shelter in Kansas City and many people donate money to them.

On a side note, they are not no-kill and I am not even sure they could be considered low kill.

Here is some financial information from Wayside Waifs for 2006 (I assume the most recent year available)

For a comparison, here is the information for the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City. The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City is about 25 miles away from Wayside Waifs.

More about Sarah Palin's polar bear fiasco

According to the Washington Post, Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin is suing the Federal Government. Palin joined four companies who want to reverse the listing of polar bears as being endangered. They claim that the polar bear species as a whole are stable and that melting sea ice does not threaten their lives. The companies involved are the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, American Iron and Steel Institute, American Petroleum Institute and the National Mining Association.

The lawsuit was filed August 4, 2008-the government has 60 days to respond.

They object to what they call the "Alaska Gap" in relation to the special rule the federal government issued in May in conjunction with the polar bear's protected status. The rule, meant to prevent the polar bear's status from being used as a tool for imposing greenhouse gas limits, exempts projects in all states except Alaska from undergoing review in relation to emissions.

Found two kittens

I found two feral kittens today. They run away from me but I think they are about 4-6 months old, maybe less. I will get a trap tomorrow (hopefully) and bring them inside and start the taming process. I am not looking forward to it because I have overwhelming school work. Although it takes a lot of energy, I accept this as my life's work. :)

Pet Food Recall-September 12, 2008!

There has been another pet food recall, this time from the Mars Petcare US Company.

The company stopped production at the Everson [Pennsylvania] facility on July 29, 2008 when it was alerted of a possible link between dry pet food produced at the plant and two isolated cases of people infected with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.

The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

A tornado near the animal shelter

I clean on Friday evenings at the animal shelter. Today we had quite a few tornadoes touch down near us. I was at the shelter with one other volunteer and I felt very nervous that I could not protect the cats if a tornado hit us.

We have about 60 cats at the shelter right now and not nearly enough room in the basement to get them to safety. We did take shelter in an inner storage closet and I was very sad that I could not save the cats if the tornado did come near the shelter.

We have carriers for the cats but I am not sure if there are 60 of them. I wish we had a better way to ensure the cat's safety.

Thankfully, the tornado did not come near us and the thunderstorm did not damage the building. All the kitties are safe. :)

7 reasons why declawing is considered cruel by many animal welfare activists

Declawing is considered inhumane and is banned in England and most European countries.
Click here for a list of countries.

Scratching is a completely normal and healthy behavior for a cat.
Reasons cats scratch:
• To slough off the husks of dead claws
• To mark their territory (with scent glands on their paws)
• To stretch their bodies

"Your cats claw is not a toenail. It is actually closely adhered to the bone. So closely adhered that to remove the claw, the last bone of your the cat's claw has to be removed. Declawing is actually an amputation of the last joint of your cats "toes". When you envision that, it becomes clear why declawing is not a humane act. It is a painful surgery, with a painful recovery period." Source: http://www.declawing.com/ Veterinarian, Dr. Christianne Schelling

Reasons for not declawing:

1. Without claws, it is impossible for any cat to scratch itself efficiently.

2. If the cat accidentally gets out of doors, it is defenseless.

3. In addition to destroying the animal's ability to groom, climb, defend itself against rivals, and protect itself from enemies, the operation of declawing also eliminates the cat's ability to hunt. This may not be important for a well-fed family pet, but if ever such a cat were to find itself lost or homeless, it would rapidly die of starvation.

4. Changes in behavior can occur. A declawed cat frequently resorts to biting when confronted with even minor threats. Biting becomes an overcompensation for the insecurity of having no claws.

5. Balance is affected by the inability to grasp with their claws.

6. Chronic physical ailments such as cystitis or skin disorders can be manifestations of a declawed cat's frustration and stress.

7. Declawing is radical surgery that involves amputating the first joint of a cat's toes. It's permanent, expensive, and irreversible, and may have unwanted affect on your cat's behavior.

There are many different types of scratching posts made of different materials. You might want to try a few different types to see which your kitty prefers.

You will never find a veterinarian who offers low cost or free declawing procedures. Why? It is not necessary to the health of your cat and many veterinarians disagree with the procedure and do not perform the surgery.

If people stopped and thought about what this surgery really did--I don't think as many people would do it. The human equivalent would be to crush and break the first knuckle of your fingers. Then, surgically removing the tips of your fingers and sewing you back up. Have a happy life trying to scratch yourself, open cans, doors, turn the page in a book, etc. Your life would be completely different and not a happy one.

A final note:
I would never declaw a cat for a few reasons.

I know what having a cat means. It means that I have a job to do as a pet parent. I have to teach my cat where to scratch from day one. They will scratch-it is a natural, innate need. It is as natural as us cracking our knuckles or stretching out our hands. They like to stretch and scratch at the same time so they choose your couch or chair because it won't topple over on them.

I clip my cats claws and provide them with different types of scratching posts and areas to scratch.

Declawing is done strictly to provide convenience for people.

Sarah Palin's confusing view on polar bears.

I was reading an article on something related to animals, but not specifically polar bears. Something about feral cats not being responsible for the decline of birds. Which, by the way, humans are responsible for the decline of birds due to urban sprawl, pollution and global warming.

So, I was reading an article and found my way to another article written by Sarah Palin from January 5, 2008. I don't know how she came upon these opinions of hers. It seems to me that the polar bears are in definite danger and she just wants to keep her pocketbook full of money from the oil industry. She wants to drill in the Artic Refuge, where polar bears live. Isn't it common knowledge that the polar bears are in trouble?

Below is a confusing quote from her OpEd in the New York Times.

They are worthy of our utmost efforts to protect them and their Arctic habitat. But adding polar bears to the nation’s list of endangered species, as some are now proposing, should not be part of those efforts.

Another quote from Palin:

The Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group, has argued that global warming and the reduction of polar ice severely threatens the bears’ habitat and their existence. In fact, there is insufficient evidence that polar bears are in danger of becoming extinct within the foreseeable future — the trigger for protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Read more from Sarah Palin

Here is a quote from the U.S. Geological Survey that seems to contradict what Sarah Palin claims is "insufficient evidence".

“There were some years when some bears may have had to swim as far as 100 miles,” Steven C. Amstrup, the senior polar bear scientist with the United States Geological Survey in Anchorage [Alaska, where Sarah Palin lives], wrote in an e-mail message. “Now the ice is much farther offshore, more consistently and for longer. So the possibility of long distances between land and sea ice is much greater.”
Read more about the polar bears

A study in Canada that contradicts her theory of "insufficient evidence":

Click here to read the study.

Yet, another study that contradicts her statement, done in her own state!

The Alaska Conservation Solutions (Palin's home state) found that annual temperatures have increased 3–5 °F and winter temperatures have soared 7–10 °F. During the last four decades, Alaska has heated more than anywhere in the country.

So, I ask, how in the world can she say there is "insufficient evidence"? She lives in Alaska! She must be aware of these temperature changes but is not willing to admit to them.

I think she is choosing monetary gain over the lives of polar bears and other arctic life. We definitely don't want her in office.

What do you think?
