New Mexico Bans Gas Chambers for Animals!

Gas chambers cause horrific, painful and slow deaths.  They are used for the convenience of animal control workers, with no compassion for the animals.  They are often terrified and crammed into the chamber with other terrified animals.  Those animals scratch, fight, and try to claw their way out of this "death box".  They vomit, defecate and urinate on themselves and the other animals in there with them. H.B. 265, a bill introduced by Rep. W. Ken Martinez, which previously passed the New Mexico House of Representatives by a vote of 62-3, has now been approved unanimously by the state Senate with a vote of 38-0.  The bill would ban use of gas chambers to euthanize dogs and cats. Currently, four localities, Portales, Tucumcari, Jal and Clovis use gas chambers. All other shelters use lethal injection.  The bill now goes to the House again for approval of Senate amendments which basically clarified that a supervising veterinarian is not required to be on the premises for a euthanasia and a euthanasia instructor need not be certified. 

There is similar bill to ban the usage of gas chambers in Georgia.

The West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a ban on the use of gas chambers by public animal shelters. An amendment would limit the ban to apply only to new gas chambers, allowing use of existing chambers to continue.  I guess it's a start...

Only thirteen states currently ban the use of carbon monoxide to euthanize animals, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Low cost spay/neuter in New Mexico

SNAP is on a roll!  This weekend, SNAP fixed 64 animals, 28 on Sunday alone. It will return to Chaparral next weekend as well.

Future locations include Las Cruces, Hatch and Radium Springs. For more information or to set up an appointment you can call SNAP at 575-524-9265. The cost is $25 for dogs and $15 for cats. Proof of income is required.

Low cost spay neuter in Las Cruces, NM in December

LAS CRUCES - Low-cost spay clinics will be offered by the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department Animal Control Division and various community organizations using the county's new animal control disaster relief and rescue vehicle.

Several community groups and organizations plan to bring the free spay clinics to various communities within Dona Ana County.

Clinics are scheduled for Dec. 5 through Dec 7, as well as Dec. 12 through Dec. 14 at the Community Center parking lot in Chaparal. Owners are asked to drop their pet off at 7 a.m. and bring vaccination records at the time of the drop off. 

Co-pays are $15 for cats and $25 for dogs. Pet owners must sign up in advance, as available slots will fill up quickly.  Registrations can be made by calling Childress at (575) 525-8857 or SNAP at (575) 524-9265.

Free microchip, free license, and reduced fee vaccines for seniors over 65 in Albuquerque Nov. 12

Albuquerque seniors over 65 years of age qualify for a free microchip, free license, and reduced fee vaccines for their pets.

There is a $5.00 cost for each shot.

Available shots include:

• Annual cat and dog boosters
• Rabies vaccine
• Kennel cough vaccine

A limited number of pets are accommodated, so seniors are encouraged to sign up for services at the senior centers prior to the clinic date.
