Mayor of Kansas town shot two dogs who were chained

This story is wrong on a lot of levels.  First, the mayor can't just go around shooting animals. There has to be some sort of protocol on these types of issues. Secondly, dogs should not be left unattended while chained and they should not be forced to live on a chain.  Thirdly, the mayor said he would shoot the dogs if they were found running loose.  Clearly, a chained dog cannot be running loose.  Finally, the mayor said he has no regrets about shooting the chained dogs.

This mayor sounds like a coward, he didn't even get out of his car to shoot them.  Also, he doesn't speak with good grammar which is evident by reading his quote.  

“They was lying on the sidewalk on the front of the house,” Fox News quoted him as saying. “I shot them with a 9mm rifle … five or six times.”

Mayor Don Call turned himself in and was charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals and one misdemeanor count of criminal discharge of a firearm.

But he said he had no regrets about killing two dogs, who, according to their owner, were chained at the time.

Call, the mayor of McCune, Kan., said he warned the dogs’ owner on Jan. 12 that if the dogs were found running loose in town again, he would shoot them.

After receiving a complaint about the dogs Sunday, February 1, he drove to the home of their owner and shot them.

The dog’s owner, Duane Wahl, said his dogs never bothered anyone and that they were chained when the mayor drove up and shot them from his car window. “They weren’t vicious dogs. They don’t bite people.”

Man shoots dog and wants charges dismissed

I was emailed about this story and after some investigative work (and help from Laura!), found the court case.  


Harold Lee Quaintance, who operates an organic farm in Edgerton, Kansas, born 6/22/63 has charges brought against him for one count of animal cruelty. I called the court house and talked with a woman who said that he is charged with shooting one dog, which is a felony.  She said that the dog could have been injured, maimed or killed and that it did not say what happened in this particular case. 


On March 18, 2008, the case was filed in the Johnson County Court.  


On July 10, 2008, a memo was filed for a diversion in this case but it says nothing else about that in the records.



Today, December 2, 2008, a motion to dismiss or reduce the charge and/or penalty has been filed.  Also, his court case record shows that a memorandum in support of the motion to dismiss and a motion to continue hearing on defedant's motion to dismiss has been filed.  I don't know much about the law, but it sounds like everyone is in agreement to dismiss this case.  



December 4, 2008 is his next date in court.

$4000 Worth of Supplies Stolen From Animal Shelter!

To those that care about the homeless pets in Kansas City:

There has been a small tragedy at The Pet Connection (TPC). On 11/19/08, TPC was the victim of a crime that will have grave costs to their shelter animals and for those that they are not able to rescue. A trailer and all the supplies needed for building 8 new dog and cat rooms was stolen. It is so sad, disappointing, and everyone at the facility is feeling a little defeated. Jason Huff and another volunteer got most of the supplies donated and spent 2 days loading it all for TPC so that the cost would be minimal. Replacement value of our loss: $4000.

They were going to start construction over Thanksgiving. The Executive Director & Operations Director had cancelled holiday plans with their families so that they could build these much needed life savers. Their Christmas gift to the homeless pets was an important one. They estimate that these rooms will help successfully house and rescue 15-40 additional pets each month. Almost 70 percent of the rescued dogs at their facility were scheduled to be euthanized in area shelters simply because of space constraints.

If anyone can send additional funding for this project, they would really appreciate. If everyone they have helped this month, would send $5......that would be about $3000. We need help. Please send your pledge today. I know that together, we can make this horrible turn of events seem small.


If they do not receive a rally from their friends, they will not be able to complete the project until much later. They are turning away about a hundred animals a month, please help them! They need these resources to be available as soon as possible-to start from scratch again.

Chow Mix Needs Rescued in Hiawatha KS

This sweet boy named Snoopy has been through a lot in the last few months. He lived chained outside for over two years, then his "owners" moved and didn't want to bring him with them. He ended up at a local shelter. Apparently, he was sprayed with a hose by the shelter manager on numerous occasions for an unknown reason.

He is now living outside at a home where there are 20 other dogs. A shelter worker brought him home to prevent him from being killed. He is not being taken care of as well as he should be. Although the woman's heart is in the right place, she can't really give them all the time they deserve.

Snoopy has a small area at the front of her house that is fenced in doesn't really have a shelter to speak of from the rain etc... there is a partial porch that is really dilapidated that he can get under if need be. She leaves early in the morning to come into work and then doesn't get home til later in the evening.

It's going to get really cold soon and we are trying to get into a home.

Michael Vick...and my reasons for that post.

Update:
I have had many people email me about my reaction to this, saying they are surprised that I would be against this. I am NEVER against promoting awareness of animal abuse. I am also NEVER against donating to animal shelters. What I am against is using Michael Vick's name to do it. I think they are making a joke of it in a way because they are all dressing up in prison clothes. I think it is inappropriate to do that and to use Michael Vick's name. I did read the entire article and I still stand by my previous opinion.

Would people be "welcoming" a child molester to the "neighborhood" if he were sent to the Leavenworth Penitentiary to speak out against child rape?

I think Michael Vick's name should be left out of it as well as the prison clothes. I think it is distasteful. I don't think they should be focusing on Michael Vick going to prison as it clouds the real issue. I understand that they are trying to tie the two together-participate in dog fighting...go to prison. They should educate the public about what dog fighting is and focus on the inhumane treatment of the dogs. They are completely skipping over that by using Michael Vick's name and a "welcome to the neighborhood" theme. It is just sick and twisted in my opinion.

I have not and am not saying I disagree with creating awareness of animal abuse and donating to shelters. I don't know why anyone would even think I was against that.

What I disagree with is the use of Michael Vick's name and the prison clothing. If they wanted to use his "celebrity" to get attention they should have said it was for the dogs that he KILLED and MAIMED--not to "welcome" him to the neighborhood.

T-Bones, Kansas City Minor League Team to host "prison themed", MICHAEL VICK night!

In an effort to raise awareness about animal abuse and pet adoption the Kansas City T-Bones have partnered with several animal safe havens to help put a stop to animal abuse on Michael Vick “Welcome to the Neighborhood” (Vick is in the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas ) night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark Wednesday, May 28. The promotion headlines the 2008 T-Bones promotional lineup that fans have come to expect at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

This is a disgrace! This is an insult to the dogs that died and the ones still alive. This is a slap in the face to our fight against dog fighting and animal abuse. Michael Vick is someone who deserves to be in jail...not to be the "guest" for speaking out against animal abuse and dog fighting. He has been convicted of both. Please write the T-Bones and let them know your feelings on this. They are "welcoming" him to our area because he is in PRISON!?

During the game both teams will be dressed the part, the T-Bones will be wearing black and white striped jerseys while the visiting Gary SouthShore RailCats will wear bright orange jumpsuit replica jerseys. The jerseys will be auctioned off following the game with the proceeds benefiting the participating pet organizations. The park will be appropriately decorated for the prison themed night.

They are completely making a joke out of the fact that he is in PRISON for what he has done. This is completely inappropriate!

Dog sexually assaulted Wichita, KS (US)

A man who Wichita police say was caught in the act of having sex with a dog will only face a misdemeanor charge, despite committing a similar crime last year in Reno County.

Police arrested Josh Coman, 20, on Tuesday evening. A woman in the 3700 block of E. Clark heard someone break into her garage. When she went to check on the noise, she says she found Coman sexually assaulting her four year old female rottweiler.

Initially arrested for aggravated burglary of a home and criminal sodomy, will only face the misdemeanor sodomy charge. Authorities say because there was no intent to commit a felony or theft, he can't be charged with burglary.

Coman pleaded guilty last year to a similar crime involving a dog in Reno County. Police say the state's new Magnum's Law, designed to protect animals from abuse, does not cover sexual assaults.

Tell Lawmakers to Ensure That Animal Cruelty Is Treated as a Serious Crime

The Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Act of 2007 would require the FBI to add animal cruelty as a separate category in its crime data reporting system. Contact your senators and ask for their co-sponsorship and support of this bill!

The link between animal cruelty and other forms of societal violence is a national concern. The practice of dogfighting perfectly illustrates this connection, as it is almost always linked to illegal drug and weapons violations, gambling, aggravated assault and gang violence.

Laws that enable law enforcement agencies to address animal cruelty increasingly improve the lives of animals. However, reported incidents of animal cruelty are still not getting the attention they deserve because there is no national system designed to track these crimes. Instead, when local and state police agencies report animal cruelty incidents to the FBI, they are labeled “other offenses.” This in turn makes it nearly impossible to access and respond to even the most basic information about animal cruelty crimes and their perpetrators.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) wants to change this. Today, Sen. Menendez introduced the Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Act of 2007, which would require the FBI to add animal cruelty as a separate category in its National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Doing so will help law enforcement agencies track animal cruelty crimes, which will help stop the cycle of violence and allow researchers to study animal cruelty’s connection to other forms of societal violence. This critical bill ensures that animal cruelty is finally treated as a serious crime.

The American Humane Association supports this legislation. Tell your senators to co-sponsor and support the Tracking Animal Cruelty Crimes Act of 2007!
