The Citizens for Humane Animal Practices and Summit County Division of Animal Control will offer a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats at 8:30 a.m. April 4 at the NEFCO Building, 180 E. South St.

All spay/neuter services will be provided at the rate of $35 for male cats and $50 for female cats.

Pet owners must register in advance by calling 330-724-6181.

Ohio man who starved dogs, some to death, to be sentenced Jan 22.

Steven Croley, the owner of High Caliber K-9 boarding and training facility, entered a not guilty plea to animal cruelty charges. After police and humane agents found seven dead dogs, and eight starving dogs at his business earlier this week. 

"Bones, carcasses, decay, it was horrible, it was enough to make you gag and throw up and cry", says Nikole Owen, CEO of Animal Charity.

Twelve of the dogs are now recovering at Animal Charity on South Avenue, while agents try to track down the animal's owners to let them know if their pets are alive or dead.

Meanwhile, Croley's home and business on Coitsville-Hubbard Road has been hit by vandals. The words "killer" and "I kill dogs" spray painted across signs, cars and broken windows.

Croley told humane agents he couldn't afford to feed or take care of the dogs he was training and boarding, but Owen said she spoke with a couple of the dog's owners this week, and they say that's not the case.

"A woman saying that she gave him over four hundred dollars, and another woman paid him over four hundred dollars just last week. So he had money...what he did with it, I don't know, but he was not feeding the animals with it", says Owen.

Another question has to do with the charges. Croley was originally charged with nineteen counts of animal cruelty and neglect, but was arraigned on only four counts in court, and that has the folks at Animal Charity upset. Owen says,

Pet Guards Shelter, 950 Hardy Road, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223, is a low-cost spay, neuter and vaccination clinic for dogs and cats, as well as a shelter that houses and adopts out unwanted cats.

The shelter is seeking donations of 1,500 square feet of vinyl flooring, a 5- to 7-ton vertical-discharge, roof-mount heating and cooling unit, a tankless water heater, window tint, signage and awning materials.

In addition, it needs these volunteers: a licensed HVAC installer, an electrician, a flooring installer, a window tinter, a sign maker and an awning maker.

Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic for Cats Only in Ohio Jan 3

Citizens for Humane Animal Practices (CHAP) will host a feline low-cost spay/neuter clinic, in cooperation with the Summit County Animal Control Department, on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the NEFCO Building at 180 E. South Street in Akron.

A male cat neuter will cost $35 and a female cat spay will cost $50.

One Year Old Yellow Lab Will Be Euthanized in Ohio if Not Adopted!

Boy Scout Builds Five Feral Cat Houses to Help Kitties

A Boy Scout on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout has built 5 feral cat houses with the help of his father, a veterinarian, and some fellow boy scouts.  He has donated them to The Cleveland Animal Protective League who will distribute them to residents who feed feral cats. 

The elevated wooden houses have an entrance on one side that will allow cats to go around an interior corner to a compartment where body heat will help them survive the winter. Cedar chips or straw can be added to increase their comfort. The shelters have a removable top so they can be cleaned.
Harvey said, "Lending a helping hand to cats who can't be socialized and will never know the pleasure of a lap or the stroke of a human hand is surely a selfless and model act of citizenship for all of us."

Low cost spay neuter in Toledo, Ohio

Cat overpopulation is an enormous problem in the Toledo area. That's why a local organization is hoping to fix more than 1,000 cats in one of the biggest problem spots.
Humane Ohio is a low cost spay neuter clinic that fixes dozens of cats and dogs every day. Right now, they have a special program for cats from the city's east side. If you live in the 43605 zip code, you can save yourself a lot of money and prevent unwanted litters at the same time.
Cat overpopulation is a growing problem in the Toledo area. "A female cat can have multiple litters every year and when you think about those kittens go on in five or six months to have litters of their own. The cat population grows so quickly and there just aren't enough homes for all these cats," says Dr. Laura Mather.
The east side is home to one of the biggest stray cat populations in the city. "The reason we are focusing this grant money on the 43605 zip code is because we felt like we could make an immediate impact in that neighborhood if we went into one concentrated area and fixed 14-hundred cats," says Jill Borkowski of Humane Ohio.
The grant money allows the low cost spay neuter clinic to fix cats in the 43605 zip code at a low cost and in some cases no cost. And the help doesn't end there. There's even a free ride to the clinic for cats from the east side throughout the month of December. "We go to the East Toledo Family Center and we'll pick the cats up. We bring them back here to the clinic, do the surgery, they will spend the night with us and then we return them the next morning to them," says Lisa Hochrade of Humane Ohio. Starr Lucius has taken advantage of Humane Ohio's low cost spay neuter clinic. She feeds a number of stray cats in her east side neighborhood.

Chained puppy dies of neglect-Sentencing Oct. 28

The Ohio woman whose German shepherd puppy died with a temperature of 106 degrees after being on a tangled chain in sweltering heat has been found guilty of animal abuse and child endangering.

Jody L. Seabolt, 48, of South Lakeview Ave., entered pleas of no contest Wednesday [Sept 3, 2008] in municipal court to the two charges. A second count of child endangering was dismissed in a plea agreement.

Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. found Seabolt guilty, ordered a background investigation and set sentencing for Oct. 28. She faces up to nine months in jail.

After court, Seabolt had no comment.

Three of her neighbors who attended Wednesday's court hearing said they hope she is punished with the maximum time in jail.

"He was cooked alive with a temperature of 106," Detective Sgt. John Perdue said in June as he signed charges against the dog's owner. "I had half the neighborhood in my office signing complaints."

The normal temperature for a healthy dog can range from 99 to 102 degrees.

When arrested in June, Seabolt lived in a house she rented at 118 S. Portland Ave. The endangering charges related to what Patrolman Sam Mosca described as the squalid and unsafe conditions he found inside Seabolt'shome.

The children, Seabolt's 8-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter, were taken by agents from Mahoning County Children Services Board and placed temporarily with an aunt, reports show. Mosca said in his report the children were home when they should have been in school and records showed they'd been absent from school a lot.

Seabolt told The Vindicator in June she was at work when her dog was removed by neighbors and taken to a vet. She denied mistreatment of the animal, saying he had food and water but added that he sometimes would knock the dishes over.
