Formerly Chained Rottweiler Saves Family from Fire

A rescued Rottweiler saved a sleeping Livonia family from dying in a fire house Tuesday morning, Livonia Fire Marshal Don Donnelley said.

The dog kept nudging his owner until he got up and saw the smoke in the living room. The home did not have a functioning smoke detector.

Ironically, the family had just adopted the dog from a family in Detroit that no longer wanted it.  The family took Boomer in about a week before Christmas. The dog had been living outside, tied to a chain.

“They rescued him, and now he rescued them,” Donnelley said.

The fire started in a living room wall in the home on Rayburn between Merriman and Middlebelt. The family had had a fire in the fireplace the evening before, and the fire may have spread to the wall space through a hole in the brickwork, Donnelley said.

The 2-year-old Rottweiler, Boomer, alerted owner John Bates at about 5:15 a.m.
“He kept putting his cold nose right into my face. He was bouncing around,” Bates said, adding that that was unusual behavior for Boomer. The family’s other dog, a 1-year-old bull mastiff named Princess, was right behind Boomer.

Dog saves owner attacked while on a trail

In Pima County, Arizona, authorities are searching for a man they say tried to abduct a woman near the Rillito River path.  The victim says she was walking her dog when a man on a bike grabbed her arms.  He tried to drag her away.  



Pima County Sheriff's Sgt Terry Parish says, "She was able to call her dog, he came she said it was something like you see on TV the dog leaped into the air hit the man in the chest and knocked him down, and she took off running."


Sgt. Parish also says he believes the dog bit the suspect because the dog had blood around his mouth.


Sgt. Parish says the woman did everything right.  "She did exactly what I would want a member of my family to do.  She made noise, she was resisting and on top of that she had a dog with her."

Dog saves owner's life at least three times a week!

Elizabeth Wilkinson was first diagnosed with diabetes as she recovered from measles at the age of nine. She later found out that her body had stopped producing insulin altogether.  She has a hard time recognizing the symptoms of a hypoglycemic attack.  This could potentially be fatal.  If the patients do not recognize the attack themselves and eat some carbohydrate to boost their blood sugar, they risk entering a coma and even death.  


Chushla, is just one of six registered hypoalert dogs in Britain which use their sense of smell to detect a hypoglycaemic attack.  She nibbles the hand of her owner to alert her.  She was adopted 

But just weeks after getting her new puppy, Elizabeth realised Chushla could detect the attacks in their early stages.

'I had Chushla for just a few weeks and I was sitting on the sofa when she started jumping on me and doing little nibbles on the back of my neck. 

'It turned out I was having a hypo and hadn't realised. Because I have had diabetes for over 40 years I don't recognise the early signs of a hypo which could potentially kill me.

'Chushla predicted that I was having an attack on a few occasions and now I don't have to worry because she can alert me and I can eat a couple of biscuits and be alright. 

'I think she keeps predicting the attacks because I give her a chocolate nibble when she saves me.'

Dog saved owner's life

Maureen Burns, 64, has a 10 year old dog named Max and he saved her life. He began to exhibit some strange behaviors. He was a playful dog who became more withdrawn. He was smelling her breath and nudging her right breast.


She examined her breasts and found a lump. She visited the doctor but the lump did not show up on the mammogram. She asked them to take a biopsy because she was sure she had cancer.

“On the same day as the biopsy, I told my nurse that I already knew, as my dear dog had told me."

“I thought she’d laugh but she said she’d heard it before.”

Maureen had two operations to remove the malignant lump, as well as radiotherapy. Her prognosis is excellent.

Maureen is now supporting Cancer and Bio-detection Dogs.
