I am just putting this question out here because I am wondering who else who might read this blog is taking care of feral cats. Please leave a comment just saying how many you take care of, how long you have taken care of them and how you take care of them, and anything else you want to say.
I live in an apartment and I am finding it very, VERY difficult to help ferals. People keep throwing my things away, or stealing them. I don't think the other people who live here care about the cats. I started to leave food outside my door, on the third floor and there are cats finding it. There has to be more than one cat because a lot of food gets eaten.
I don't know how many there are, or even what they look like. I want to trap one or more of them soon. I need to get another cage. I still have Annie here, and she is in two cages but she needs both. She is actually out, running around in the spare bedroom right now.
So, let me know if you take care of ferals, I would love to talk about it. I could get some good ideas from others who have taken care of them for awhile. I am new to feral cat care.

Do you have an Alley Cat Rescue group there? They hold free spay/neuter days and might be able to offer you some other advice - when you do trap a cat, keep the cage covered to lessen stress on the cat. It's a huge job - bless your heart for making the effort. All our cats were ferals - they DO respond to love....
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments!
ReplyDeleteI have trapped one cat so far and I am taming her. It is a lot of work! She sits on my lap for about a minute and she lets me pick her up for about 30 seconds. When I first got her, she wouldn't let me get within 10 feet of her without hissing and running away.
I am feeding some other cats but I haven't seen them yet.
Thanks for the information about free spay days. I am going to check that out. I am a Feral Friend through Alley Cat Allies.
I currently am helping feed 5 ferals in another town that is on my way to and from work. I have helped with the rescue of cats left when a trailer park was closed (about 25). I also live next to a junk yard so I get new ferals in my barn frequently. I have all of the ones that have stayed in the barn fixed now (low cost through the Humane Society). I also have 6 indoor cats - one is 20, 3 are 19 and the other two are 12 and 10. I have 6 currently living in the barn and I have all of them tamed now. There is another one that runs when I go out - hopefully I will get that one to stand still long enough to get a good look at it! I am considered a "crazy old cat lady" but I don't have more than I can take care of and I love every one of them!
ReplyDeleteWow! You certainly have a lot of work to do! Good for you for taking care of so many cats! They appreciate it so much.
